Lamlash Bay to Loch Gair

After our earliest start yet, we set off at 8:45am from Lamlash and after a short motor out of the bay we unfurled the genoa. Then, as the boat was moving quite slowly, we unfurled the mizzen and main sail. Whilst Emma was at the helm we managed to get an impressive 8.4 knots – our highest yet! The wind eventually got too strong and much to Emily’s annoyance, under Colin’s instruction we furled in the main sail. For the first time today, travelling down the side of the Isle of Arran, we weren’t tipped on our side! This upset Lydia who was revelling in the ability to walk on a slant below deck.
After we cleared the top of Arran and got to the open windy water our jacket potatoes were ready, but the cooks (Emily and Charlotte) decided to postpone lunch for a while until we were in calmer waters, sheltered by the Mull of Kintyre. After finally eating our delicious jackets, we made our way up Lower Loch Fyne to the difficulty that was Otter’s Spit. This was hard to navigate round, due to many rocks.
We managed though - 35 miles and 7 hours later (of which only 1 hour was motoring) we entered Loch Gair. We are now anchored in Loch Gair, round the tea table with tea in the oven, cookies for pudding made, 4 girls hyper on deck and 2 others in the bow revising. Can’t quite believe we only have 1 full day’s sailing left – we’ve only just got the hang of how to sail this boat!
